Short Film Research: Samurai Frog Golf

Common Sound in my genre

In the film "Samurai Frog Golf," the use of sound played an important role in creating the overall atmosphere and mood of the film. Throughout the film, there were ambient sounds such as crickets and other natural sounds that added to the sense of place and helped to create a sense of realism.

These ambient sounds, also known as background or atmospheric sound, help to create a sense of atmosphere and immersion for the viewer.

In addition to ambient sounds, the film also used diegetic sound to further enhance the realism and immersion of the film. Diegetic sound refers to sound that is part of the story world and can be heard by the characters in the film. In this case, the diegetic sound of the samurai's knife and sword added to the action and tension of the battle scenes, making them feel more realistic and exciting for the viewer.

Overall, the use of sound in "Samurai Frog Golf" played a vital role in creating the mood and atmosphere of the film and helped to enhance the viewer's experience.

Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in my genre

In film and television, the use of camera angles can greatly impact the way a scene is perceived by the audience. High angles and low angles are two common techniques that can be used to convey different emotions or characteristics of a character.

In the film "Samurai Frog Golf," high angles are used to show the turtle's weakness when being attacked by the birds. High angles are often used to make a character or object appear small or powerless, as they are shot from above. By using this angle, the audience is able to see the turtle's vulnerability and the danger it is facing.

On the other hand, low angles are used to show the samurai frog's power and superiority over the birds. Low angles are often used to make a character or object appear larger or more dominant, as they are shot from below. By using this angle, the audience is able to see the samurai frog's strength and confidence as it battles the birds.

Overall, the use of high and low angles in "Samurai Frog Golf" helps to convey the power dynamics between the characters and create a more immersive and engaging viewing experience for the audience.

Common Editing in my genre

Shot reverse shot is a common editing technique used in film and television to show a conversation or interaction between two characters. This is achieved by cutting back and forth between two shots, one of each character speaking or reacting. In the film "Samurai Frog Golf," shot reverse shot is used to show the emotions and reactions of the birds and the samurai during the big battle. By cutting between the two characters, the audience is able to see how each side is feeling and reacting to the situation. This helps to create a more immersive and engaging experience for the viewer, as they are able to see the emotional stakes of the battle and understand the motivations of the characters. The use of imaginative script style and lettering in the opening credits also adds to the unique theme of the film, setting the tone and establishing the overall aesthetic for the short.

What elements of the genre that you like?

In the film "Samurai Frog Golf," symbolism was used heavily to convey deeper themes and meanings. One example of this was the use of the empty shell after the turtle had been killed by the birds. This empty shell could be seen as a symbol of death or loss, as the turtle's life had come to an end. However, the use of eggs in the film could also be seen as a symbol of new growth and the potential for new life. This could be interpreted as a message of hope and the idea that even in the face of death, there is always the possibility for new beginnings. By using these symbols, the film is able to convey deeper themes and emotions beyond just the surface level narrative of a samurai frog fighting birds.

What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?

I did not like that the film was animated. This is not accurate or easily relatable to my film since my film is not animated. The use of animation in the film "Samurai Frog Golf" does not align with the style or aesthetic of the film I am going to work on. Different genres and films can utilize various techniques and elements in order to convey their message or tell a story. Some people may enjoy the use of animation in films, while I  prefer more realistic or live action approaches. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what works best for the specific film or project. It is important to consider the elements of a genre and how they can be used effectively in order to create a cohesive and engaging film.
